How Many Weeks Are in a Month? Days, Weeks, Months and Years Conversion Chart
On average, a month is about 4.35 weeks, or 4 weeks and 2–3 days. Here is the math, how to convert between days, weeks, months and years, and charts for the periods people look up most.
How many weeks are in a month? The question comes up when you plan a schedule, track a pregnancy, or count the days to an anniversary. Months run from 28 to 31 days, so most of them are 2 or 3 days longer than 4 weeks. This guide walks through the math, how each month length works out, how many weeks are in a year and in six months, and how to turn 1,000 days into years and months. Conversion charts are at the end.
A month is about 4.35 weeks (4 weeks and 2–3 days)
Because months aren't all the same length, start with the length of a year, divide by 12 to get the average month, then divide by 7.
365.2425 days ÷ 12 = 30.436875 days (the average month)
30.436875 days ÷ 7 ≈ 4.348 weeks
Rounded to two decimal places, that's about 4.35 weeks. Four weeks are 28 days, so the average month runs about 2.44 days past 4 weeks. That's where "4 weeks and 2–3 days" comes from.
Why use 365.2425 days for a year?
The Gregorian calendar we use today adds a leap day, February 29, every four years. Years divisible by 100 are common years (not leap years), though, unless they're also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 won't be.
Under that rule, every 400 years contain 97 leap years: 100 years divisible by 4, minus the 4 divisible by 100, plus the 1 divisible by 400 (100 − 4 + 1 = 97). That makes the average year:
(365 days × 400 + 97 days) ÷ 400 = 365.2425 days
The Time Period Converter uses these average lengths too. It opens with 1 month already converted, so you can check the numbers right away.
Weeks in each month, by length (28 to 31 days)
Real months are 28 to 31 days long. Divide by 7, and every month comes out to 4 weeks plus 0 to 3 days.
| Length | In weeks | Months |
|---|---|---|
| 28 days | Exactly 4 weeks | February (common year) |
| 29 days | 4 weeks 1 day | February (leap year) |
| 30 days | 4 weeks 2 days | Apr, Jun, Sep, Nov |
| 31 days | 4 weeks 3 days | Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Aug, Oct, Dec |
Seven of the 12 months have 31 days and four have 30, so most months are 4 weeks and 2–3 days. Only February in a common year is exactly 4 weeks.
How many weeks are in a year? (52 weeks and 1 day)
Divide 365 days by 7 and you get 52 with 1 left over, so a year is 52 weeks and 1 day. A leap year has 366 days, which makes it 52 weeks and 2 days.
| Year length | In weeks |
|---|---|
| 365 days (common year) | 52 weeks 1 day |
| 366 days (leap year) | 52 weeks 2 days |
| 365.2425 days (average) | About 52.18 weeks |
Why a date moves one weekday each year
Since a year is one day longer than 52 weeks, any given date falls one weekday later the next year. If February 29 comes in between, it moves two weekdays.
- October 17, 2026: Saturday
- October 17, 2027: Sunday (one day later)
- October 17, 2028: Tuesday (two days later, because of February 29, 2028)
Some years have a week 53
If you count by week number, some years run to week 53. Under the ISO 8601 international standard, a common year that starts on a Thursday, for example, has 53 weeks, and 2026 is one of them. The Weeks Calculator shows today's week number, and our guide What Is an ISO Week Number? explains the rules.
How many weeks are in six months?
Half a year averages about 182.62 days, or about 26.09 weeks. Six real months run 181 to 184 days depending on where you start, which is 25 weeks 6 days to 26 weeks 2 days. A stretch that includes February is shorter, and one with more 31-day months is longer.
How to convert days, weeks, months and years
Conversions are easiest if you turn everything into days first. You only need four numbers:
- 1 week = 7 days
- 1 month = 30.436875 days (average)
- 1 year = 365.2425 days (average)
- 1 day = 24 hours
Weeks to days: multiply by 7
8 weeks is 8 × 7 = 56 days, and 12 weeks is 12 × 7 = 84 days.
Days to weeks: divide by 7
The whole-number answer is the weeks, and the remainder is the extra days. 100 ÷ 7 = 14 remainder 2, so 100 days is 14 weeks 2 days. For 1,000 days, it's 142 remainder 6, or 142 weeks 6 days.
Weeks to months: convert to days, then divide by 30.436875
8 weeks is 56 days, and 56 ÷ 30.436875 ≈ 1.84 months. Take away one average month (about 30.44 days) and about 26 days are left, so you can also call it about 1 month and 26 days. 4 weeks (28 days) is about 0.92 months, a little short of a full month.
Months to weeks: multiply by 30.436875, then divide by 7
3 months is 3 × 30.436875 ≈ 91.31 days, and 91.31 ÷ 7 ≈ 13.04 weeks. Three real months are 89 to 92 days. A month and a half is about 45.66 days, or about 6.52 weeks (6 weeks and 3–4 days).
Days to years and months: divide by 365.2425 or 30.436875
1,000 ÷ 365.2425 ≈ 2.74 years, and 1,000 ÷ 30.436875 ≈ 32.85 months. Broken into years, months and days with average lengths, that's 2 years 8 months 26 days. Since 26 days is nearly a month, rounding to the nearest month gives about 2 years 9 months. 10,000 days is about 27.38 years, or about 27 years 5 months.
Hours to days: divide by 24
100 hours ÷ 24 ≈ 4.17 days, which is 4 days and 4 hours.
The Time Period Converter takes combinations such as 14 weeks 6 days or 2 years 3 months, and decimals such as 1.5 months. It shows the answer in years, months, weeks, days, hours and minutes at once, along with the formula it used.
Average, 30-day and calendar months: why answers differ
The same 1,000 days can give slightly different answers depending on how you count months. Here's how the three methods in the Time Period Converter compare.
| Method | Month and year length | 1,000 days is |
|---|---|---|
| Average | 1 month = 30.436875 days 1 year = 365.2425 days | About 2.74 years, or about 2 years 9 months (2 years 8 months 26 days when broken down) |
| 30-day month | 1 month = 30 days 1 year = 365 days | 33.33 months (2 years 9 months 10 days) |
| Calendar | The real calendar | Starting Saturday, October 17, 2026: Friday, July 13, 2029, which is 2 years 8 months 26 days later |
With 30-day months, 1,000 ÷ 30 ≈ 33.33 months. Thirty-three months (2 years 9 months) add up to 990 days, leaving 10 days. The calendar answer shifts by a few days depending on the start date.
Average: for a general sense of length
You get the same answer whatever the start date. It's the best fit for questions like "How many weeks are in a month?" or "How many months is 8 weeks?"
30-day month: for quick estimates
It's easy to do in your head, and it matches agreements that treat every month as 30 days. But 12 of these months add up to only 360 days, 5 days short of a 365-day year, and the gap grows over longer periods. The month in the Unit Converter is also 30 days.
Calendar: when you need real dates
Counting on the real calendar from a start date gives you the end date and its weekday, which is what you need for anniversaries and deadlines. When the target month is too short for the start day, the date moves to that month's last day. One month after January 31 is February 28 (February 29 in a leap year).

Counting pregnancy weeks
Pregnancy is counted in weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period, which is week 0, day 0. To turn weeks and days into days, multiply the weeks by 7 and add the days: 14 weeks 6 days is 14 × 7 + 6 = 104 days. The due date is 40 weeks 0 days, or 280 days.
In average months, 280 ÷ 30.436875 ≈ 9.2 months (about 9 months and 6 days), close to the nine months people usually mention. In Japan, pregnancy is also counted in 4-week months, so the same 40 weeks is called "10 months."
The Time Period Converter accepts entries like 14 weeks 6 days. For your due date and current week, use the Due Date Calculator, and see our guide to due dates and pregnancy weeks for more detail.
Pregnancy weeks and due dates are estimates. For medical decisions, talk to your doctor.
