How are words counted?

English words are counted by spaces. Japanese characters (kanji, hiragana, katakana) are counted individually. Consecutive numbers are counted as one word.

What is the difference between UTF-8 and Shift_JIS bytes?

In UTF-8, Japanese characters are 3 bytes each, while in Shift_JIS they are 2 bytes. UTF-8 is standard for the web, while Shift_JIS is used in some legacy Japanese systems.
