About the Golden Ratio

The golden ratio (about 1:1.618) has been used in architecture, painting, and design for centuries as a proportion perceived as beautiful. This tool instantly calculates the other side length and the total from a known side using the golden or silver ratio. All processing happens in your browser, and your input is never sent to a server.

FAQ

What is the golden ratio?
The golden ratio is approximately 1:1.618, derived from the irrational number (1+√5)/2 (phi, φ). It appears throughout nature and art and is regarded as a well-balanced, pleasing proportion.
How is it different from the silver ratio?
The silver ratio is 1:1.414 (1:√2), used in paper sizes like A4 and in traditional Japanese architecture. It feels slightly less elongated than the golden ratio. This tool lets you switch between both.
How can I use it for font sizes?
By repeatedly multiplying a base body size by the ratio, you can build a harmonious size scale (type scale) from headings to body text. The ratio scale feature gives you those values directly.
How accurate are the results?
Ratios are computed with decimals, and results are rounded to about two decimal places for display. This is plenty precise as a design guideline, but note the rounding if you need exact figures.
Is my data saved anywhere?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser, and your input is never sent to or stored on any server. You can use it with peace of mind.
