Tips for Reviewing Your Insurance

Once you know your required coverage, compare it with your current policy. Understanding any gap helps when using a neutral service to compare or consult on multiple insurance options. This tool does not recommend any specific product.

Important Notes
  • Results are rough estimates based on general assumptions and do not constitute tax, investment, or insurance advice.
  • Survivor pension figures are estimates based on representative 2026 amounts and may differ significantly depending on contribution history, salary, and eligibility. The basic survivor pension (including the child addition) is assumed to be paid until the end of the fiscal year in which the youngest child turns 18 (age 20 for a child with disabilities).
  • Education and living costs are general statistical estimates. Adjust the amounts to fit your household.
  • For your actual required coverage and insurance choices, please consult a qualified financial planner.

What Is Required Coverage?

Required coverage is the shortfall between the total money your surviving family needs if the breadwinner passes away and what can be covered by survivor pension, spouse income, and savings. That shortfall is a good guide for how much life insurance to buy. This calculator estimates it from your family situation, and all calculations run entirely in your browser.

FAQ

How much life insurance do I actually need?
There is no single answer; it varies greatly with family size, living costs, education plans, survivor pension, and savings. The basic approach is to estimate the shortfall (total needs minus total income) with this tool and use that as your coverage guide.
How is required coverage calculated?
Sum total needs (living, housing, education, funeral), then subtract total income (survivor pension, spouse income, savings, death benefit). A positive difference is your estimated required life insurance coverage.
How much survivor pension will my family receive?
Employees and public servants receive the basic survivor pension (for a spouse with children) plus the employees' survivor pension, while the self-employed mainly receive the basic survivor pension. The basic survivor pension (including the child addition) is calculated on the assumption that it is paid until the end of the fiscal year in which the youngest child turns 18 (age 20 for a child with disabilities). Amounts depend on contribution history and salary, so this tool estimates them. Check the Japan Pension Service for exact figures.
What if I have a mortgage?
With mortgage life insurance (dan-shin), the loan is paid off on the breadwinner's death, so housing cost is no longer needed. Check "own home with mortgage life insurance" to set housing cost to zero. For rentals, enter your monthly rent.
How should dual-income households think about this?
If your spouse has stable income, enter their annual income and working years; it is added to total income and reduces required coverage. Dual-income households generally need less coverage than single-income ones.
Does this tool recommend a specific insurance product?
No. This tool is purely for understanding your required coverage neutrally and never recommends any specific insurer or product. Treat the result as a rough guide only.
Is my household data saved?
No. All calculations run in your browser (JavaScript) and nothing you enter is ever sent to or stored on a server, so you can use it with peace of mind.
