A capital loss is not taxed. By filing a tax return you can offset it against other listed-stock gains and (separately-taxed) dividends in the same year, and carry forward any remaining loss for up to three years (loss carryover).
Tax-free in a NISA Account
Gains and dividends earned inside a NISA (tax-exempt investment) account are tax-free, so the tax shown here does not apply. Note that losses in a NISA account cannot be offset against gains in other accounts and cannot be carried forward.
Tokutei-koza (with withholding)
With a "specified account with withholding" (tokutei-koza), your broker automatically withholds and pays the 20.315% tax on each sale, so generally no tax return is required. Annual gain/loss offsetting and refunds are settled within the account. You can use this tool as a rough estimate of that withheld amount.
