Fractions under one year are rounded up to a full year (e.g. 30y 3m -> 31y).
If you retire as a direct result of becoming disabled, 1,000,000 JPY is added to the retirement income deduction.
Executives include company directors/auditors, Diet/local assembly members, and civil servants. Executives with 5 years or less of service do not get the 1/2 taxation benefit.

Important Notes
  • Results are an approximate estimate only and do not guarantee the actual taxed or deductible amounts.
  • This is a simplified separate-taxation calculation for retirement income only. It does not handle multiple retirement payments in the same year or combination with lump-sum DC pension payouts.
  • Resident tax adjustment credits and the per-capita levy, as well as various tax credits, are not reflected. Actual resident tax may differ.
  • This tool is not tax advice. Confirm exact figures with a tax professional, your municipality, or the tax office.
  • All calculations run in your browser; your inputs are never sent to any server.
  • [Change from January 2026] If you receive an iDeCo (defined contribution pension) lump sum on or after January 1, 2026 and later receive a company retirement allowance, an iDeCo lump sum received within the 9 years before the year of the allowance (previously 4 years) triggers an adjustment of the retirement income deduction for overlapping service periods, which can increase the tax (the "5-year rule" became a "10-year rule"). This tool does not include that adjustment.
  • [Change from January 2027] A new 1% "special defense income tax" is added to income tax, while the reconstruction surtax drops from 2.1% to 1.1%, so the combined surtax rate (2.1%) is unchanged. The "Income Tax (incl. reconstruction)" figure remains a valid estimate for allowances received in 2027 or later.

About the Retirement Allowance Tax Calculator

In Japan a retirement allowance is taxed as "retirement income," separately from salary and other income. A retirement income deduction based on years of service is subtracted first, and in principle only half of the remaining amount is taxed, which significantly lightens the tax burden. This tool instantly calculates the deduction, taxable retirement income, income tax (incl. the 2.1% special reconstruction surtax) and resident tax, and estimates your final take-home amount in your browser.

FAQ

How is tax on a retirement allowance calculated?
First, a retirement income deduction based on years of service is subtracted. In principle, half of the remainder becomes the "taxable retirement income," to which income tax (progressive rates plus a 2.1% reconstruction surtax) and a 10% resident tax are applied under separate taxation.
How much is the retirement income deduction?
For 20 years or less: 400,000 JPY x years of service (minimum 800,000). For over 20 years: 8,000,000 + 700,000 x (years - 20). Fractions under a year round up. Disability-related retirement adds another 1,000,000 JPY.
Is the tax higher if service is 5 years or less?
Executives with 5 years or less of service (specified executive payments) do not get the 1/2 rule. For non-executives with 5 years or less, the portion above 3,000,000 JPY after deduction is not halved, raising the burden. This tool handles both cases.
When and how much is the resident tax?
Resident tax on retirement income is 10% of the taxable retirement income (6% municipal + 4% prefectural), withheld at the time of payment. This tool uses a simplified 10% without adjustment credits.
Is this result accurate?
It is an approximate estimate. It assumes the "Report on Receipt of Retirement Income" has been filed. Results change if you receive multiple retirement payments in a year or have other tax credits, so confirm via your withholding slip or the tax office.
Is my data saved or sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser, and your inputs such as the retirement amount are never sent to or stored on any server.
What should I watch for if I receive both an iDeCo lump sum and a retirement allowance?
An iDeCo (defined contribution pension) lump sum is also retirement income, and when the two are received close together, the retirement income deduction is adjusted for overlapping periods (for iDeCo, the contribution period). If you receive the iDeCo lump sum first on or after January 1, 2026, a later retirement allowance is now adjusted against lump sums received within the 9 years before the year of the allowance (previously 4 years), the so-called 10-year rule. This tool does not include the adjustment, so if you plan to receive both, check the order and timing with the tax office or your financial institution.
Will the special defense income tax from 2027 increase tax on my retirement allowance?
The combined rate does not change. From January 2027 a 1% special defense income tax is added to income tax, but the reconstruction surtax is lowered from 2.1% to 1.1% at the same time, so the total surtax remains 2.1% of income tax (the reconstruction surtax period is extended).
