Important Notes

  • Results are estimates only and do not constitute tax, social insurance, or labor advice.
  • Social insurance is estimated with the employee share of FY2026 Kyokai Kenpo prefecture rates (from March 2026), nursing 1.62%, the child and childcare support levy 0.23%, pension 18.3% and employment insurance (general business) 0.5% for the employee. Previous-month premiums use the standard monthly remuneration derived from your previous salary; actual amounts vary by your standard remuneration and bonus brackets.
  • Withholding tax is calculated using the NTA "Bonus Withholding Rate Table", Column A (dependent declaration filed): the 2026 table for bonuses paid in 2026 and the 2027 table for bonuses paid from January 2027.
  • The child and childcare support levy started with premiums for April 2026 (paid in May). The FY2026 rate is 0.23% (employee 0.115%); it does not apply to bonuses paid in March 2026 or earlier.

About the Bonus Take-Home Calculator

This tool calculates your net bonus (take-home) by deducting social insurance (health, pension, employment, nursing, child and childcare support levy) and withholding income tax from your gross bonus. Bonus tax is calculated differently from monthly salary: the rate is determined by your previous month salary (after social insurance) and number of dependents. The tool uses FY2026 (Reiwa 8) Kyokai Kenpo rates by prefecture and the official NTA bonus withholding rate tables for 2026 and 2027, and runs entirely in your browser.

FAQ

How much is the take-home of a bonus?
Generally about 75-85% of the gross is your take-home. Social insurance (health, pension, employment, the child support levy, plus nursing at 40+) and withholding income tax are deducted. The exact amount depends on age, previous salary, dependents, and prefecture, so use this tool to calculate.
How is bonus income tax calculated?
The rate is found from the NTA bonus withholding table using your previous month salary (after social insurance) and dependent count, then multiplied by (bonus minus its social insurance). This tool uses that official method (Column A): the 2026 table for bonuses paid in 2026 and the 2027 table for bonuses paid from January 2027.
Is resident tax deducted from a bonus?
No. Resident tax is not withheld from bonuses. It is levied on the prior year's income and deducted from monthly salary in 12 installments, so it is excluded from bonus take-home.
How is bonus social insurance determined?
It is based on the "standard bonus amount" (gross bonus rounded down to the nearest 1,000 yen) multiplied by each rate. Health, nursing, the child support levy and pension are split with the employer; this tool shows your share (about half). Employment insurance applies to the full bonus.
Is there a cap on the standard bonus amount?
Yes. Health insurance is capped at a cumulative 5.73M yen per fiscal year (Apr-Mar), and pension is capped at 1.5M yen per payment. This tool reflects these caps as an estimate.
What is the child and childcare support levy ("singles tax")?
It is the "Child and Childcare Support Levy" collected on top of health insurance premiums from the premiums for April 2026 (paid in May). The FY2026 rate is 0.23%, of which employees pay half (0.115%). Because everyone pays it regardless of having children, it is sometimes called a "singles tax". It does not apply to bonuses paid in March 2026 or earlier, so you can choose whether to include it.
What if there was no salary in the previous month?
If there was no previous-month salary, or the bonus exceeds 10x the previous salary (after social insurance), a special rule uses the monthly tax table instead of the bonus rate table. In that case this tool's tax may differ from the actual amount.
Is my data saved?
No. The amounts you enter are never sent to or stored on any server. All calculations run entirely in your browser.
Does bonus income tax change from 2027?
Yes. In line with the higher basic deduction and employment income deduction from the FY2026 tax reform, the bonus withholding rate table is revised for bonuses paid on or after January 1, 2027. The salary brackets move up, so the rate may drop a step for the same previous salary (e.g., with 0 dependents and a previous salary after social insurance of 260,000 to under 263,000 JPY, 6.126% becomes 4.084%). Bonuses paid in 2026 are withheld with the pre-reform 2026 table and the difference is settled in the year-end adjustment.
