Resident Tax Calculator

Estimate your Japanese resident tax (10% income levy + per-capita levy) from taxable income, or from an estimated taxable income derived from your salary after the employment income deduction, social insurance, basic deduction, and dependent deductions. Switch between fiscal 2026 (2025 income) and fiscal 2027 (2026 income); the adjustment credit and non-taxable thresholds are included.

Fiscal year

Resident tax on income earned January–December 2026, paid from June 2027. The minimum employment income deduction rises from ¥650,000 to ¥740,000, so a single person with salary only owes nothing up to ¥1.19M a year. The resident tax basic deduction stays at ¥430,000 (the higher income tax basic deduction of up to ¥1.04M does not apply to resident tax).

×10,000 JPY

When starting from taxable income, fiscal 2026 and 2027 use the same rates, adjustment credit, and per-capita levy (year differences such as the employment income deduction are reflected in "From Salary (Estimate)"). The adjustment credit assumes a single person (personal deduction difference of ¥50,000).

×10,000 JPY

Dependents aged 16 or older (general dependent deduction of ¥330,000 each). A dependent must have total income of ¥580,000 or less in fiscal 2026 (salary up to ¥1.23M) and ¥620,000 or less in fiscal 2027 (salary up to ¥1.36M).

Standard rate is municipal 6% + prefectural 4% = 10% total (8% + 2% in designated cities). The standard per-capita levy is municipal ¥3,000 + prefectural ¥1,000 + forest environment tax ¥1,000 = ¥5,000. Some municipalities (e.g. Yokohama) differ.

This tool provides estimates only and actual resident tax may differ.

Per-capita and income levy rates vary by municipality. Always check the latest information from your local city or ward office.

Tax credits such as the dividend, housing loan, and donation (Furusato Nozei) credits, non-salary income, and the income amount adjustment deduction are not reflected. Non-taxable status is judged in "From Salary (Estimate)" using the Grade 1 area thresholds (e.g. Tokyo's 23 wards); Grade 2 and 3 areas have slightly lower thresholds.

This is a general informational estimate, not tax advice. For an accurate amount, consult your municipal office or a tax professional.

About the Resident Tax Calculator

Japanese resident tax (juminzei) is a local tax levied on the previous year's income, made up of an income-proportional "income levy" and a fixed "per-capita levy." This tool applies the standard 10% rate to your taxable income (or an estimated taxable income derived from salary), subtracts the adjustment credit, and adds the per-capita levy, computing an approximate resident tax entirely in your browser. It handles the employment income deduction for fiscal 2026 and 2027 and the non-taxable thresholds. Your input is never sent to a server.

FAQ

How is resident tax calculated?
Resident tax is the sum of an "income levy" proportional to taxable income (standard total 10% = municipal 6% + prefectural 4%) minus credits such as the adjustment credit, and a fixed "per-capita levy" (¥5,000 a year as standard).
What is the 5,000 JPY per-capita levy?
The per-capita levy is a fixed amount charged regardless of income. The standard is municipal ¥3,000 + prefectural ¥1,000 + the forest environment tax (a national tax) ¥1,000 = ¥5,000; the forest environment tax has been collected with the per-capita levy since fiscal 2024. Municipalities with local surcharges charge more (e.g. ¥6,200 in Yokohama for fiscal 2026).
What if I do not know my taxable income?
Use the "From Salary (Estimate)" tab, which subtracts the selected year's employment income deduction, social insurance, the basic deduction (¥430,000), and dependent deductions from your salary to estimate taxable income, and also checks non-taxable status. This is an approximation, so check your withholding slip or tax certificate for the exact figure.
Does resident tax differ by municipality?
Yes. Most municipalities use the standard rate (10% total), but designated cities split it as municipal 8% + prefectural 2%, and some add local surcharges. For example, Yokohama charges municipal 8% + prefectural 2.025% and a per-capita levy of ¥6,200 (fiscal 2026). You can adjust the rates and per-capita levy in advanced settings, but confirm the exact amount with your local office.
Is my income data stored or sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser, and your income or salary inputs are never sent to or stored on any server. Please note this tool is a general informational estimate, not tax advice.
How do the 2026 tax changes affect resident tax?
From fiscal 2027 (tax on 2026 income), the minimum employment income deduction rises from ¥650,000 to ¥740,000, so people earning roughly ¥2.2M or less pay slightly less, and the non-taxable salary line for a single person rises from ¥1.1M to ¥1.19M. The dependent income limit also rises from ¥580,000 to ¥620,000 (salary up to ¥1.36M). The resident tax basic deduction stays at ¥430,000 and does not rise like the income tax basic deduction (up to ¥1.04M), so more people pay resident tax even with zero income tax (e.g. a single person earning ¥1.78M pays no income tax but about ¥37,000 of resident tax, assuming social insurance of 15% of salary).
Who is exempt from resident tax?
People whose previous-year total income is below a threshold are exempt. In Grade 1 areas such as Tokyo's 23 wards, a single person is exempt with total income of ¥450,000 or less (salary only: up to ¥1.1M for fiscal 2026 and ¥1.19M for fiscal 2027). With dependents, the per-capita levy threshold is ¥350,000 x (you + spouse + dependents) + ¥100,000 + ¥210,000, and the income levy threshold is the same base + ¥100,000 + ¥320,000. Grade 2 and 3 areas use slightly lower thresholds. The "From Salary (Estimate)" tab uses the Grade 1 thresholds.
What is the adjustment credit?
It offsets the extra burden caused by personal deductions (basic, spouse, dependents, etc.) being smaller for resident tax than for income tax, and is subtracted from the income levy. It applies if your total income is ¥25M or less; for a single person it is usually ¥2,500 (municipal ¥1,500, prefectural ¥1,000). This tool reflects your dependents in "From Salary (Estimate)" and assumes a single person in "From Taxable Income".
