* This tool provides approximate calculations only and is not tax advice. The declining balance method here is a simplified reproduction of the "200% declining balance with switch to even depreciation" approach. Actual guaranteed depreciation amounts, revised rates, special rules for low-value assets, and rounding may differ under tax law and the latest official useful-life tables. Always check the latest useful-life table and consult a tax professional or the tax office before filing or bookkeeping.

How It Is Calculated

Straight-line: Annual depreciation = Acquisition cost × straight-line rate (≈ 1 / useful life)

The same amount is depreciated every year. A memo value of 1 JPY is kept in the final year.

Declining balance: Annual depreciation = Beginning book value × declining balance rate

Depreciation is larger in early years and shrinks over time. Once the amount falls below a threshold, it switches to evenly depreciating the remaining book value over the remaining years (simplified here).

Proration: First-year depreciation = Annual depreciation × months in service ÷ 12

Assets first used mid-year are depreciated only for the months they were in service in the first year.

FAQ

What is the difference between straight-line and declining balance?
The straight-line method depreciates the same amount every year and is simple to calculate. The declining balance method applies a fixed rate to the beginning book value, so depreciation is larger early on and shrinks over time. Choose declining balance to expense more upfront, or straight-line for steady, even amounts.
How is the declining balance rate determined?
For assets acquired on or after April 1, 2012, the "200% declining balance" method is standard, where the rate is 2.0 times the straight-line rate (1 / useful life). The auto setting in this tool uses this 200% rate. You can also enter a custom rate manually.
Why does the final book value remain at 1 JPY?
In depreciation, a memo value of 1 JPY is typically kept to show on the books that the asset still exists; depreciation does not go below this. This tool keeps 1 JPY in the final year.
What are first-year months in service?
It is the number of months from when the asset was first used in the business until the end of that fiscal year. If used mid-year, the first year is prorated by "months in service ÷ 12". If used for the full year, keep it at 12 months.
Can I use these results directly for my tax return?
No. This tool provides approximate figures only and is not tax advice. Guaranteed depreciation amounts, revised rates, special rules for low-value assets, and rounding differ under tax law and the latest official useful-life tables. For actual filing or bookkeeping, always check the latest useful-life table and consult a tax professional or the tax office.
