Choose what to calculate

Use "Add & subtract" to total several times, "Start to end" for the time between two clock times, or "Weekly hours" for a week of shifts.

Type times the way you normally write them, such as 1:30, 1h 30m or 90 min. Paste a whole column from Excel or a timesheet with "Paste a list".

The total appears in hours and minutes, with decimal hours (such as 7.75), minutes, seconds and an Excel-ready [h]:mm value, each with a copy button. Rounding and pay are optional.

What is the Time Calculator?

A calculator for adding and subtracting hours and minutes, the time between a start and end time, and a week of working hours. It reads times however you write them (1:30, 1h 30m, 90 min, 1.5 hours) and lets you paste a whole column copied from Excel or a timesheet. Results are shown in hours and minutes, in decimal hours for payroll, and as [h]:mm so Excel shows totals over 24 hours correctly. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

FAQ

How do you add hours and minutes?
Add the hours and the minutes separately, then carry every 60 minutes over as an hour. For 1:30 + 2:45, that is 3 hours and 75 minutes, which becomes 4 hours 15 minutes. With this tool, type the times as you normally write them and any number of rows are added automatically.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 20 minutes is about 0.33. The "Decimal hours" value can be copied for payroll.
Why does Excel show the wrong total when it goes over 24 hours?
Excel's time format (h:mm) wraps around every 24 hours, so 30 hours shows as 6:00. Set the cell's custom format to [h]:mm and it shows 30:00. The "Excel ([h]:mm)" value from this tool can be pasted straight in.
Can it handle overnight shifts?
Yes. In "Start to end", enter 22:00 to 6:00 and, because the end is earlier than the start, it is taken as the next day: 8 hours. 25:00 is read as 1:00 the next day. If an end time such as 3:00 could also mean the afternoon and the result crosses midnight, the tool asks whether you meant 3 pm.
How do I subtract a break?
Enter the break as a length such as 60 min or 1h, or as times such as 12:00-13:00. For two breaks, separate them with a comma: 12:00-13:00, 15:00-15:15. 9:00 to 18:00 with a 60-minute break is 8 hours.
Can I round to 15 minutes?
Yes. Under "Rounding", choose 15 min and round up, down or to the nearest. 1, 5, 10 and 30 minutes or a custom number of minutes also work, and in "Add & subtract" each row can be rounded before adding. Follow your workplace's rules for rounding working time.
Can I add up video or audio lengths to the second?
Yes. To read 3:45 as 3 minutes 45 seconds, set "Read 1:30 as" to "1 minute 30 seconds". 1:02:03 (1 hour 2 minutes 3 seconds), 3m 45s and 225s are read as they are, and the total is also shown in seconds.
Can I total a column copied from Excel or a timesheet?
Yes. Paste the column into "Paste a list", or straight into a row, and each line becomes a row in the total. Rows that cannot be read turn red with the reason, and lines without numbers, such as headers, are skipped.
Which formats can I type?
1:30, 1h 30m, 1.5h, 90 min, 01:30:00 and more, including full-width digits. Plain numbers such as 7.75 are read as hours (you can switch to minutes). To subtract, tap + to switch it to −, or type -1:30. Write 1:20×5 to multiply a row by five.
Can it total a week of work hours and overtime?
"Weekly hours" takes start, end and break times from Monday to Sunday and shows the weekly total and the hours over 8 per day and 40 per week (both limits can be changed). Overtime pay is calculated in the Overtime Pay Calculator.
