About Unicode Inspector

A web tool that breaks down any text character by character and lists the Unicode code point, UTF-8 byte sequence, HTML entity and more. It correctly handles surrogate pairs (characters made of multiple code units, such as emoji) using codePointAt. Great for debugging mojibake, verifying encodings and spotting invisible characters. All processing happens in your browser, and your text is never sent to any server.

Features

  • Code Point DisplayShows each character in U+XXXX form and decimal so you can verify exact Unicode values instantly.
  • UTF-8 Bytes & EntitiesDisplays the UTF-8 byte sequence (hex) and HTML numeric character reference (&#xXXXX;) side by side.
  • Emoji & Surrogate SupportUses codePointAt so emoji and combining characters are parsed correctly as single characters.
  • Privacy ProtectedAll processing runs in your browser. Your input text is never sent to any server.

Use Cases

  • Debug mojibake and encoding issues
  • Detect invisible characters (e.g. zero-width spaces)
  • Obtain HTML entities (numeric character references)
  • Check emoji code points for implementation
  • Verify character codes and regex handling in code

FAQ

Is the Unicode Inspector free to use?
Yes, it is completely free. No registration or installation required - just open it in your browser.
Does it handle emoji correctly?
Yes. Many emoji are represented by surrogate pairs (two code units), but this tool uses codePointAt to read the correct code point as a single character. Note that combined emoji such as skin tones or flags are shown as multiple code points.
What is the difference between a code point and UTF-8 bytes?
A code point is the Unicode number assigned to a character (e.g. "あ" is U+3042), while UTF-8 bytes are how that character is actually encoded as a byte sequence (e.g. "あ" is E3 81 82). One code point encodes to 1-4 bytes.
Is my input text sent to a server?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never sent to or stored on any server.
Can it reveal invisible or control characters?
Yes. Zero-width spaces, control characters and similar are detected as individual characters with their code point and category shown - useful for finding stray invisible characters from copy-paste.
Can I use it on my smartphone?
Yes, it works in the browser on all devices including smartphones, tablets and PCs.
